MANILA, Philippines – In a long list of Philippine chief executives including his own grandfather, Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Manuel Roxas II picked Benigno Aquino III as “the best president in Philippine history.”<br /><br />

During a Town Hall forum organized by CNN Philippines recently, Roxas was asked who he thought was “the best president in Philippine history except for your grandfather.”<br /><br />

“I would say Noynoy Aquino, undoubtedly,” said Roxas on Thursday, December 10, of the man who has endorsed his presidential bid for 2016.<br /><br />

He added: “Undoubtedly, ang tawag sa 'tin ay sick man of Asia, para tayong lumpo, may sakit, hindi tayo nakakasabay sa ating mga kapitbahay na bansa. Ngayon, tawag sa 'tin, Asia's bright star. Malayo nang narating natin. Nagsimula lahat ito sa Daang Matuwid mula nung 2010. It's amazing what we can attain as a people, maglagay ng daang malinis at matuwid na pamunuan.”<br /><br />

(We used to be called the sick man of Asia, we were a lame duck, we were sick, we weren’t at par with our neighbors. Now we’re called Asia’s bright star. We’ve come a long way and this started because of Daang Matuwid in 2010. It’s amazing what we can attain as a people, if your leaders follow the straight path.)<br /><br />

Roxas was anointed by Aquino as his preferred successor when he steps down in 2016. He is also president-on-leave of the ruling party, which Aquino chairs. (READ: Aquino as 'minister mentor' under Roxas presidency?)<br /><br />

Aquino and Roxas go a long way. In 2009, Roxas was set to be LP’s standard-bearer for the 2010 national elections, he but slid down at the last minute for then Senator Aquino, whose numbers shot up following the death of his mother, democracy icon and former president Cory Aquino.<br /><br />

Instead, Roxas ran for vice president in 2010, but lost to then Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay. Vice President Binay is now seeking the presidency too.<br /><br />

Six years later, it’s Roxas’ turn to vie for the presidency. His is a campaign that is hinged on the promise of continuity and of “Daang Matuwid (Straight Path),” the administration’s tagline for its good governance, transparency, and anti-corruption platform.<br /><br />

‘Rigorous debate’<br /><br />

But even if he thinks Aquino is the best Philippine president, Roxas said that he has had arguments with the President.<br /><br />

“The short answer is, yes, there have been times, but most of those disagreements were in speed for direction or timing of the decision,” said Roxas, responding to a question from the audience.<br /><br />

Roxas cited the 2012 impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was eventually found guilty of being dishonest in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth. The impeachment process was launched right before Christmas and ended 5 months later in May.<br /><br />

“There was a discussion and we ended up doing it before Christmas as opposed to January,” said Roxas.<br /><br />

Another instance, said Roxas, was with the country’s budget.<br /><br />

“There have been vigorous discussions about where to spend the money. The President is very, very clear in making sure that we actually solve problems as supposed to just make up or passing down the road,” he added.<br /><br />

Aquino allows “very rigorous debate” and “encourages it to improve the decision making,” said Roxas. “But at the end, once there's consensus and once that there is a decision, then we all support it,” he said, referring to Aquino’s Cabinet and allies.<br /><br />

But there was also an instance wherein Roxas, one of Aquino's closest advisers, was not consulted. Even if he was interior secretary, Roxas was kept out of the loop in a high-stakes police operation targeting top terrorists. (READ: President Aquino and the ghosts of Mamasapano)<br /><br />

5 years a success?

Asked if the last 5 years under Aquino “have been a success,” Roxas said yes. “Completely,” he added.<br /><br />

“Narating ng bansa natin ang antas sa ekonomya, sa pamumuhay, sa investments in infrastructure, 'tsaka sa services na generations na hindi pa natin nararating,” he said. (The country has reached a level of the economy, of standards of living, and of investiments in infrastructure and of social services that we haven’t reached in generations.)<br /><br />

Roxas went on to cite increases in the country’s capital outlay, from P170 billion in 2010 to over P580 billion in 2015, and wider reach in health care services.<br /><br />

This has been the LP's and Roxas’ approach since announcing his candidacy: numbers, statistics, and testimonies as supposed proof that “Daang Matuwid” is effective.<br /><br />

“Daang Matuwid” under a Roxas administration, he said, would follow the same “set of values” but would be applied under a different set of problems.<br /><br />

“So pagdating naman ng 2016, iba naman 'yung mga problema natin, problema of 'yung inclusive growth na tinatawag, problema ng tinatawag nitong mga infrastructure na dapat ng mapabilis ang paggawa,” he added.<br /><br />

(When 2016 comes along, our problems would be different. There are problems of inclusive growth, and of badly-needed infrastructure.)<br /><br />

While Aquino has been praised for gains in cleaning up government and for spurring the economy, his critics have pointed out that these economic gains have yet to be felt by the country’s poor. Transportation woes are also issues being hurled at him.<br /><br />

Roxas, as the ruling party's standard-bearer who also happened to be transportation chief for over a year, has had to answer these criticisms as well.<br /><br />

Quitting will never be an option for Senator Leila De Lima despite numbers of hate messages on her mobile phone and cases against her in related to the illegal drug trades in Bilibid Prison.<br /><br />

The Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, Buhay Rep. Lito Atienza and Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque suggested that Senator Leila De Lima should resign since the evidence and statements from the witnesses are credible enough to file a case against her.

Meanwhile, De Lima is still consistent not to back down and continue to fight and defend herself, she said:<br /><br />

Should I resign? ako ang ginigipit nila sa mga walang katuturang akusasyon nila. Hindi ako magre-resign.

Senator Leila De Lima calls the attention of United Nations to come over to the Philippines and investigated the extra-judicial killings brought by the President Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.<br /><br />

Therefore, the Malacanang officials invite whole-heartedly the UN officials to visit whenever they want and conduct the investigation and witness how hard the situation of our country in terms of drugs and crimes.

De Lima sent the letter as well as the filing of the invitation to UN the same day she was ousted and replaced by Senator Richard “Dick Gordon”.

 It is hereby resolved, in view of the foregoing reasons and circumstances, the Senate respectfully urges the Executive Department, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, to extend an invitation to the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, Ms. Agnes Callamard, to conduct a visit to the country and perform inquiries or investigation on the unprecedented phenomenon of extrajudicial killings and summary executions that has arisen during the aggressive enforcement of the administration’s war on drugs.

To provoke the UN officials, De Lima also includes the summary count of the killings:
3, 173 people during the anti-drug  campaign
1,138 killed in arrest efforts
2,035 victims of vigilante attacks.
 The average number of persons killed daily for the past two and a half months is 42.3. By any standard, the statistics are alarming and staggering. And, judging from both official and media sources, there is no showing that we will soon experience a downtrend in the figures.-De Lima’s resolution

President Rodrigo Duterte is not a man of his word after asking another six months extension to end the rampant illegal drugs in the country instead of quitting from office.<br /><br />

"Where was his promise to resign?" asked by Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo to President Duterte.

"In the campaign, he categorically said that the drug problem would be solved in six months or he would step down.<br /><br />

But of course he is not a man of one word. His words cannot be trusted and he gives a lot of excuses"

Vintage bomb unearthed in Puerto Princesa construction site

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, PALAWAN - Construction workers found an alleged vintage bomb in their construction site at Purok Banyuhay, Barangay Bagong Sikat, Puerto Princesa.<br /><br />

According to one of the construction workers, the bomb they saw resemble what they have seen on television.

Residents in the area were also alarmed for fear that the bomb would explode.<br /><br />
Local stories claim the place was an old camp of soldiers from World War II.

The City Police Explosive Ordnance Division (EOD) checked the bomb, and confirmed that it is a vintage bomb capable of exploding.<br /><br />

Authorities reminded the public to immediately inform security officials if they see anything suspicious and looks like a bomb.

John Parsons, an American living in Baguio City, noticed that President Duterte always got negative news from the international media. Parsons also believes that Duterte is a real President that Filipinos must be proud of.

I finally feel that I need to speak up.
There has been much in the press lately about newly elected Philippine President Duterte. Most of what is said focuses on his policies toward the illegal drug problem, and his direct (to put it mildly) comments to other national leaders, particularly to US leaders. The world's press responds with concern, even alarm. In the Philippines, he is immensely popular. As an American who has lived here in the Philippines for 30+ years, I think I understand why.<br /><br />
Allow me to explain. First of all, the facts. 1) Americans almost never take culture and other cultures' viewpoints and values into consideration. Almost never. That explains nonsense foreign policy and constant misunderstanding. 2) Americans are one thing; the American government is something different. Generally speaking, Americans are liked here. Generally speaking, the American government is grossly arrogant and condescending, and is often despised because of it. 3) Other nations and cultures, in this case the Philippines, are fed up because of #1 and #2.<br /><br />
Along comes a man like President Duterte. He is not a "ruling class politician". He tells it like it is, no political gibberish. He identifies problems and tackles them head-on. He knows where he is going, and doesn't waste time dancing with the stars. And he is not afraid. He is going after the illegal drug trade, which means going after politicians and large segments of law enforcement and military. He is going after chronic problems that have been perpetuated by established political practices that served only the masters and not the nation.
Fiipinos have a President, a real President, one that they are proud of. And rightly so.
He is engaging China, not challenging China. He has to. It's the largest nation on earth, only 400 miles away, has a massive army, and pretty much controls the economy of SE Asia. Why not depend on the Philippines own 'relational intelligence' and the art of negotiation, of which Filipinos are masters?<br /><br />
No more is the day that the nation says, "We are suffocating under a blanket of drug addiction, corruption, a government that doesn't care - and we can't do anything about it." Yes, the Philippines can do something about it. The national attitude has changed in only weeks. The nation is standing, is standing on it's own, and is looking at other nations eye-to-eye. Peers. A sovereign nation among sovereign nations.
Then along comes a few international organizations and the press: "You can't do that - respect the rule of law!" Then comes the American President (see #2 above) saying the same thing. Well, whose rule of law are we talking about? (see #1 above) Missed bomb runs in Afghanistan are just "collateral damage", but a fierce fight against crime is a violation of human rights? So President Duterte calls the American President on his hypocrisy and arrogance. Filipinos cheer. They have a President who demands respect as an equal.<br /><br />
Just today, after more statements about President Duterte's anti-crime actions and human rights, the Philippine Foreign Minister says, "[The Philippines} cannot forever be the little brown brothers of America." The CNN writer commented, "The phrase is used in the Philippines to refer to people that are trying to act like they're American." What a laugh - that's the equivalent of believing 'the finger' is really a Hawaiian peace sign. That's what Foreign Minister Yasay was saying: "Stop looking down on the Philippines, stop treating us as inferiors, stop telling us what to do, and while you're at it, go take a long walk on a short pier." But, being Filipino (masters of relational intelligence), he said it in a nice, diplomatic way - so much so that the audience probably did not realize what he was really saying (see #1 above).<br /><br />
Filipinos cheer again. "We are a sovereign nation. We can and will clean up our problems. We will take our rightful place among the nations that we should have taken a long time ago. All we ask for is a little respect. treat us as brothers - equal brothers."
I feel really good about living here.<br /><br />

Colangco confirms that De Lima gets 3 Million every month to allow illegal drug trade in Bilibid

A four page affidavit obtained by the STAR, explained the amount that Senator De Lima received from the cartels inside the National Penitentiary to continue their illegal activities even they are already imprisoned.<br /><br />
